Macrame refers to a textile that is made using a series of knotting techniques which can create a range of patterns and textures.
A macrame kit, such as those that can be seen at //www.woolcouturecompany.com/collections/macrame-kits, can offer a step-by-step guide to making a range of projects including wall hangings and plant hangers.
As this House Beautiful article points out, superstar Drew Barrymore even uses macrame to conceal the TV screen in her bedroom. But today we’re here with our quick guide to making a wearable macrame bracelet.
You will need:
Macrame cord
Ruler
Scissors
Tape
The Method
1: Cut
Cut two lengths of macrame cord, one 32 inches and one 80 inches.
2: Fold and Secure
Fold the shorter cord in half. Keep hold of the loop at the top, wrap it around your finger and tie a knot an inch from the top of the loop. Tape this loop to your work surface.
3: Connect
Take your 80-inch cord and find the centre. Place it beneath the taped cords just below the knot.
Move the left side of this cord all the way over each of the other cords, taking care to leave a significant loop on the left-hand side. Take the right cord over to the left, underneath each of the other three cords. Then pull it upwards through the loop.
Pull on both the left and right cords to form a tight knot. Congratulations – you’ve just tied your first half knot spiral!
4: Continue Knotting
Repeat the same knotting process again and again. As you do this, the bracelet will start to flip and create a spiral pattern.
5: Close your Knots
When your bracelet is long enough to fit comfortably around your wrist, separate the cords into two pairs. Tie each pair in a single knot.
6: Make a Slip Knot
Remove the tape and move the loop over the knotted bracelet. Pull approximately two inches through the loop and pull the loose strands through the new opening. This creates a knot which can be used to open and close your bracelet.
