Most of us are working in jobs that require us to be sat at our desks for long periods of time. This has become one of the biggest contributing factors to an increase in the number of people finding their weight increasing and having problems with their back.

We spend a lot of time thinking about the type of desk to buy so that it compliments the rest of our office, the specification of our computers and ensuring that we have our IT Support Cheltenham set up by https://reformit.co.uk/ but, we don’t often think about how we are sitting at our desk and the placement of items on it.

There are a number of things that you can do to help:

  • Adjusting your chair – this is important to ensure that your back is supported, as well as your wrist and neck. Your legs should be at a 90 degree angle to the floor whilst you have your knees bent, this allows your back to be supported by the chair. You should also ensure that your upper back is supported by the chair, this may involve increasing the height of the back section. When you are comfortably seated your elbows should rest on the table so that your arms are at a right angle to the floor. Using a keyboard support will also help to alleviate any tension in your wrists.

  • When it comes to your legs, in your seated position, your feet should rest comfortably flat on the floor, if this is not possible then you should use a footrest at a height that will allow you to sit comfortably with your feet flat on the rest. You also want to ensure that you don’t sit with one leg crossed over the other as this can lead to further posture related problems.
  • Your eye level positioning can help to alleviate problems with your neck and upper back. Ideally you should be sat in a position where your eye level is in the upper part of the screen. This will prevent you from having to bend your neck either down or up to see your screen effectively.
  • Your keyboard should be placed directly in front of you and ideally there should be at least 6 inches available for your wrists to rest comfortably in between your bouts of typing. This is the same for your mouse which should be placed within easy reaching distance of your keyboard to help reduce the amount of movement that is needed.
