Whether you’re heading off to University for the first time or a returning student, living away from home for the first time can be both a liberating and daunting prospect. There are ways to keep yourself safe, healthy and performing at your peak ability so let’s take a look at the things you can to consider your well-being while away from home:

  1. Eat

Student budgets are tight but don’t skimp on a healthy diet to buy other things instead. If you start to neglect your nutrition you run the risk of weakening your immune system and catching every cold and flu virus doing the rounds! Remember fruit and veg, which can be picked up cheaply from a market and the odd fast food meal is fine so long as it’s not every night!

  1. Possessions

Students can sometimes find themselves the victim of crime, whether it’s a stolen bike or laptop, the results are equally as upsetting. Don’t leave your items unattended or unsecure and always lock your room door when you go out. If you’re worried about taking expensive items then think about leaving at home or take out an insurance policy for peace of mind.

  1. Health

Universities will have a comprehensive health and support service so whether you want help emotionally or physically, don’t be afraid to reach out and use that support network. Register with a GP near your university when you first arrive. Think about contraception and protection if you think you might be having sex during your time at university. Don’t let an unpleasant infection ruin your student experience or the experience of others. If you’re ever unsure about your sexual health, there are now home kits available so you can check yourself. For Home STI Kits Bexley, visit https://www.bexleysexualhealth.org/home_sti_kits/.

  1. Sleep

This one might not be top of your agenda and probably comes somewhere near the bottom of the list, under partying. Rest is essential for both your mind and body, as it’s a time for recuperation. If you don’t fit in enough sleep between socialising and studying then you’ll begin to feel worn down and this is when your immune system lies open for targeting from a lurking virus. Want a good time and good grades? Then don’t underestimate the power of a god night’s sleep.

  1. Safety

Just as you would on a night out at home, stick to the sensible things you’ve been told about staying safe while out at night. You might think you’re in a safe, student bubble surrounded by like-minded people but you never know! Ladies – don’t walk home alone, don’t accept lifts from strangers and don’t accept drinks from strangers or leave your drink unattended. Try not to drink so much that you lose awareness of your surroundings and don’t let your friends leave themselves in vulnerable positions either. A great time can be had by all if you follow a few simple rules to guarantee everyone stays safe and happy.
