When rich, socialite and incredibly snooty Joanna Stayton, (Goldie Hawn) hires local carpenter Dean Proffitt, (Kurt Russell) to completely remodel the bedroom closet on her husband’s, Grant Stayton the 3’ds enormous yacht little do either of them realise that this is the beginning of the story to their True Love affair.
Dean completes the required, complicated task to a fantastically high standard but uses Oak wood, Joanna complains bitterly that she wanted Cedar wood and refuses to pay even though she hadn’t actually specified what type of materials she wanted. After a heated argument Dean’s tools are thrown over the side of the yacht into the Ocean. As the discontented million-heiress Joanna and her husband sail away from Elk Cove Oregon, Joanna accidentally falls overboard and the local news reports an unknown woman with amnesia being found on the beach where widower Dean lives. Dean arrives at the hospital where Joanna is recovering and convinces her that her name is Annie Proffitt, they are married and have four sons. The severe effects of her amnesia just like the effects of Korsakoff Syndrome means Joanna remembers very little, if anything at all of her previous life. Joanna as Annie tries to make the best of the situation and the couple soon fall in love.
The relationship flourishes, the boys do much better at school and Annie helps Dean design his dream of a miniature golf course. After cheating husband Grant returns to reluctantly collect Joanna, Dean confesses all and eventually he and Joanna reunite and decide to have a baby to complete their new family.
