Ever wondered what happens during the production of a film or TV show? There is a vast network of people working behind the scenes to bring the production to your screen! You’ll see a variety of people and jobs on set when filming.

Maintenance of a set involves a variety of different occupations, such as:

Grip Staff: These are the people who put together and maintain all the equipment that supports cameras and sound systems. These could be dollies, jibs, cameras, light stands and other mechanisms required for equipment operation. People who choose this career will be able to solve problems, have an aptitude for engineering, and possess technical skills.

Camera – Filming is more than just pointing the camera at a subject and pressing the record button. The camera crew includes First Assistant Cameras, Second Assistant Cameras, Director of Photography, Stills Photographers and Media Management. They are responsible for setting up the monitors, operating the cameras and tracking the footage.

The largest crew, the production crew, is responsible for everything from the needs of actors to finances and organisation. The Unit Production Managers, Secretaries, Personal Assistants and Production Coordinators are just a few of the jobs available. This line of work is for people who aren’t always tied down to a specific set. They are also good communicators and have a great understanding of what goes on.

Props – The props department deals with all the objects needed to film, such as weapons, food, and furniture, or anything that an actor may need to hold, touch, or use during filming. This job is for you if you are a perfectionist and enjoy sourcing perfect objects.

Medical Staff – It is common to have medical staff on the set in case of an accident, illness, or injury. Find out more about Film Medics by visiting Outdoor Medical, provider of Film Medics.

Costume – The costume department is responsible for all the costumes that actors wear in a production. This could include the design of costumes as well as procurement, alterations, and authenticity. Costume and wardrobe departments are usually separated on a large film set. Wardrobe is in charge of storing costumes and making sure the right costumes are on set. It also helps actors dress.

Hair and Makeup – In order to ensure that everyone on the set looks great, hair stylists create their own department. Special effects make-up artistry is also included. On a programme or film that requires a lot of special effects, this could be its own department. People drawn to this career will need to have good communication skills and be able to work closely with actors.
